About the PNG format
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format with full transparency support. It is the standard choice for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or text, where every pixel must survive intact. Its weakness is size: a photograph saved as PNG is far bigger than the same picture as JPG or WebP.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my PNG files get?
PNG is lossless, so re-saving it as PNG in the browser cannot make it smaller. This page therefore saves the result as WebP by default, which keeps transparency and typically cuts the size by 60 to 90 percent. If you must keep PNG, choose Same format as original and set a max width or height to downscale instead.
Is the compression lossless?
No, it is lossy compression, which is what makes the files dramatically smaller. At sensible quality settings the difference is hard to see; raise the quality if you notice artifacts.
How do I compress a PNG to under 1 MB or 100 KB?
Set the quality to around 70 percent and add a max width or height such as 1920 px, then check the size shown on the result. Still too big? Lower the quality or the max side and run it again; a 100 KB target usually means around 60 percent quality and 1280 px.
Can I compress several PNG files at once?
