    About the JPG format

    JPG (or JPEG, after the Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most widely used photo format. Its lossy compression is tuned for photographs and produces small files that every camera, phone, browser and app can open. It supports neither transparency nor animation, and each re-save discards a little more detail.

    How much smaller will my JPG files get?

    Photos re-encoded at 70 percent quality typically shrink by 40 to 80 percent, depending on how they were saved originally. Adding a max width or height, such as 1920 px, saves even more. The exact savings show on every result.

    Is the compression lossless?

    No, it is lossy compression, which is what makes the files dramatically smaller. At sensible quality settings the difference is hard to see; raise the quality if you notice artifacts.

    How do I compress a JPG to under 1 MB or 100 KB?

    Set the quality to around 70 percent and add a max width or height such as 1920 px, then check the size shown on the result. Still too big? Lower the quality or the max side and run it again; a 100 KB target usually means around 60 percent quality and 1280 px.
