About the AVIF format
AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, derived from the AV1 video codec. It compresses even better than WebP, supports transparency, HDR and wide colour gamuts, and is displayed by every current browser. Outside the browser, though, support is still patchy: many editors, viewers and upload forms cannot read it yet.
About the JPG format
JPG (or JPEG, after the Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most widely used photo format. Its lossy compression is tuned for photographs and produces small files that every camera, phone, browser and app can open. It supports neither transparency nor animation, and each re-save discards a little more detail.

Why convert AVIF to JPG?
JPG produces small files that open everywhere, from decade-old software to web forms with strict size limits, which makes it the universal format for photos. AVIF is still unsupported by many photo editors, viewers and upload forms outside the browser.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so a little detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At 85 percent quality or higher the difference is invisible for most images, and you can push the slider to 100 for maximum fidelity.
What happens to transparency?
JPG has no transparency. Transparent areas of the AVIF image are flattened onto a white background. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
